Description

This, my friends, is an absolutely marvelous piece of history, on more than one level.

This was originally a box that held 25 pounds of dried prunes, surplus farm commodities, back in the 1930s.

In the early 1940s, a friend of ours who’s now in his late 80s upcycled the box – although the word “upcycle” was decades away from existence – into a painted box with a handle on each end when he was 13 years old and learning carpentry.

That fabulous folk art design was something our elderly friend just came up with on his own – isn’t it wonderful? The colors are shades of yellow, red, and green. While he ending up spending most of his adult life as a general contractor, it's clear to us that he was an artist as well.

This is the text from the inside of the box:

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The Surplus Marketing Administration, U.S. Department of Agriculture, for distribution by state welfare agencies only to persons and school lunch programs certified as eligible to receive surplus commodities. Unauthorized sale or diversion is punishable under the laws of the state of distribution. Not to be sold.

25 lbs. net weight Lot G N

DRIED PRUNES

Not to be sold
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

This is 6 inches tall, 9-3/4 inches wide, 15-1/4 inches deep, and the 2 metal handles are 4-5/8 inches wide. The box has tons of vintage patina as shown in the photos. Remember to use etsy's zoom function, the little magnifying glass over on the right underneath the photos, to get up close and personal.

We charge you what we're charged for shipping - it's really just that easy. This weighs 5 lbs. wrapped to ship.

~*~ OH, AND... please be sure to use etsy's zoom function on anything on etsy you're thinking of buying - it's that little magnifying glass icon next to the word "zoom" under the photos over on the right. Click it for each photo individually to get really up close and personal with the items you're ogling! See all the gorgeous and all the flaws and do consider photos part of the listing description. Questions are always welcome. ~*~
