Description

This is an original 1st edition coloured lithograph on soft woven paper

Madonna & Angel

Carefully taken from Flora, by Pamela Bianco, Published by William Heinemann, 1919

Paper Size: 8¾ in x 11¼ in, 22.5cm x 28.5cm (approx.)
Image Size: 2½ in x 3¾ in, 6.5cm x 9.5cm (approx.)

It is in good condition. There is some overall age toning of the margins, but the colour of the image itself is vibrant. There is some very light foxing and a diagonal crease at the top right and left hand corners.

Pamela Bianco (1906-1994) is the daughter of Margery Williams, the author of The Velveteen Rabbit. She was an American/English child prodigy who began her career at the age of 12. The book that this lithograph is taken from is a result of her first exhibition in the Leicester Galleries in London in 1919 when she was 13 years old. Walter de la Mare, the English author and poet, a visitor to the show, was so moved by her exquisite drawings that he wrote the poems that accompany the lithographs.

Her life was spent between Europe and America, moving among literary and artistic circles. Her wide-ranging friendships included Walter de la Mare, George Gershwin, Cecil Beaton, Charlie Chaplin and Eugene O'Neill.

Pamela went on to illustrate books written by others. In 2005 the first retrospective exhibition of her work was held by the England & Co art gallery in London.
