Description

#TC-14 Notes on Life (Commission Example)

Dimensions: 11" H x 17" W
Translucent vitreous glass tile on glass base. Wooden frame. Ungrouted. Hanging hardware installed.

Inspired by a friend's explanation of the 'Mixolydian Mode', a musical mode or scale. Mixolydian mode may refer to one of three things: the name applied to one of the ancient Greek harmoniai or tonoi, based on a particular octave species or scale; one of the medieval church modes; a modern musical mode or diatonic scale, related to the medieval mode.

Being based on the dominant seventh chord, it is common in non-classical harmony, such as jazz, funk, blues and rock music. Examples of music employing this mode include: "Old Joe Clark"; "She Moved Through the Fair" (traditional Irish folk song); "Sweet Home Alabama" by Lynyrd Skynrd; "Norwegian Wood" by The Beatles; "Dark Star" by the Grateful Dead.

This piece, rendered in translucent shades of glass tile, is lovely hanging in a sunny window: music twinkling in the light. It also shines as an opaque wall hanging--the colors deeper and cooler.
This particular mosaic is already sold, but I am happy to receive commissions. Whether you envision another version of an already existing mosaic, or something entirely unique, I'm eager to work with you to create the art which you visualize. Each of my pieces are entirely handmade, meticulously created from hand cut tile. This mosaic was tiled with colored translucent vitreous glass, but there are myriad materials which can be employed: translucent colored tile, Smalti (Italian glass) tile, marble, stone, porcelain, recycled glass/ceramic, etc.

All of my mosaics are handmade, one-of-a-kind, and signed/dated. Commissioned mosaics include: opaque pieces, framed or unframed, for wall hanging; translucent pieces for window or outdoor hanging; mirrors; recycled window panes with translucent mosaic; table tops; chess boards; small framed mosaics for shelf display; translucent lightbox mosaics; address plaques; indoor/outdoor installations in the Maryland/Virginia/DC area.

Prices vary depending on materials, size and complexity of the commission. Shipping costs are also an estimate.
