Description

#OC-12 Flower Abundance Floor Mosaic (Commission)

Dimensions: 7' H x 5' W (approximately 35 sq.ft.)
Materials: Vitreous glass tile set on cement board over plywood flooring. Grouted and sealed.

This richly detailed mosaic floor was commissioned for a house entryway. The front door opens directly onto the mosaic. While this is a relatively large mosaic, it is still highly detailed--as can be seen in the close-up photographs.

The inspiration for the design is one of the 'Twelve Months of Flowers' series of engravings completed in 1731. Each of the twelve prints includes an ornate vase overflowing with flowers(which bloom in the appropriate month), as well as an identification key below. Along the bottom of each print is the inscription: "From the collection of Robt. Furber Gardiner [sic] at Kensington 1730". The floor design is not a replication of any particular month, but rather a likeness in spirit and structure, with a unique combination of flowers and foliage.

This particular mosaic was created in Maryland. The tiles were cut and glued to a mesh background, which was then shipped to the house in California, and set on cement board covering a plywood floor. It was grouted and had a heavy duty sealant applied--designed to withstand the heavy traffic of an entryway. The floor was installed two years ago, and there have been no problems with cracking or any sort of damage caused by foot traffic.

This piece was tiled with vitreous glass tile (rated for use both indoor and outdoor)--on any commission I am happy to work with the customer to choose the type of tile which will complement their home (e.g. glass tile, smalti, porcelain, natural stone, ceramic, metal, etc.). A combination of different types of tesserae is also possible, limited only by the need to provide a level surface if the mosaic is set on a floor. Wall designs, fireplace frames, kitchen backsplashes, bath/shower designs and outdoor designs are all available. The choice of design is virtually endless, limited only by the requirements of the space in which the mosaic is to be layed. I would be pleased to work with you to make your dreams a reality in your home or office.

Mosaics can be designed and created in my studio, shipped on mesh backing and set by a local tile installer, or I will be happy to do the installation myself for an additional cost. Please inquire if you are interested in having a unique mosaic made to your design and installed in your home. Outside the DC/Virginia/Maryland areas there will be additional costs for travel.

Prices will vary according to the type of tesserae used, the level of detail required by the design, and the cost of safe shipping.
