Description

This necklace features the skull of a vole (a small rodent) hanging from a chain. The skull has been carefully cleaned and coated in a hardener to protect it. Choose if you want a gold-splashed skull (my favorite), or plain white.

Each necklace is handmade and may vary slightly due to the unique qualities of each bone.
Necklace can be short, medium, or long. Short and medium lengths will include an easy to use magnetic clasp, while long lengths will have no clasp. Lengths can be adjusted upon request.

Midnight Snack Jewelry features bones dissected from owl pellets found locally in the Northwest.

After eating a meal, owls will regurgitate the bones, fur, and feathers in a packet known as an owl pellet. I scavenge these pellets from a local wildlife area, heat-sanitize each pellet, then dissect and thoroughly clean all bones found within. The bones are then used to create unique jewelry for you! The most common bones found come from mice, shrew, birds, moles, and voles. Owl habitat is left undisturbed and no animals are harmed in the creation of this jewelry- except for the little critters that provided a great meal for an owl!

FAQs

No! Owl pellets are regurgitated, so they're more like owl vommit.
Each owl pellet is heat-sanitized before dissection. The bones are then thoroughly cleaned with hydrogen peroxide before being transformed into wearable works of art.
Tiny bones like the ones used in my jewelry are naturally quite fragile. However, I coat each bone with a hardener to protect it from breaking. Of course, you should be gentle with your bone jewelry, but if it does break, I will happily repair it free of charge. Please keep in mind that every bone is unique so a replacement bone may not be identical.
The types of bones found vary from seasons to season and from pellet to pellet. The most common bones are from vole (a small rodent), but there are also many shrew, moles, mice, and sometimes even birds. My favorite bones to find are from the red-toothed shrew- the tips of this critter's teeth are bright red from iron deposits!
I collect my pellets in the wild on Sauvie Island. Owls can be very sensitive to intruders so i don't visit the site often and I am very quiet when i am there. I can't share my specific spot for owl pellets, but next time you take a walk through the woods, keep your eyes open and you may find a pellet or two!
All jewelry items ship in a ready-to-gift cute box. If you would like me to send your order as a gift (without mentioning the cost, or with a short note from you) just me know!
