The stories of two ballets - Swan Lake and Petrouchka - were retold for young readers in this charming book - but it's its glorious, glamorous illustrations that stand out.

It was published in 1946 by the Sylvan Press - seemingly an eclectic publisher that worked a lot with lithographers, and was used for that reason in the 1940s by the London Underground to print some of its iconic posters. The quality here is very good - especially considering the hard-pressed post-war shortages and conditions for publishers and printers at the time.

The lithographs in this book are credited to Sylvia Green, who (my research seems to tell me) was actually a costume designer in the theatre (and presumably ballet): some of her costume sketches are held by the V&A.

The book is in very good condition and measures 19 cm x 25 cm. It weighs 140 g.
