Scythian Stag - Sterling Silver Brooch - Lost Wax Cast

Description

Sometimes, while wandering through a museum, I'm struck by the beautiful dynamism and--there's no better word for it--modernity of an ancient design. That was certainly the case with the deer fibula that inspired this brooch: it's in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art in Ohio, labeled simply as "Fibula in the Form of a Recumbent Stag, ca. 400 A.D."

The label doesn't say much about the artist who originally created the energetic design, but the style and location are consistent with one of the many cultural groups who fall within the broad category of "Scythian." Generally, the Scythians were nomads who inhabited the Eurasian steppes and parts of Siberia. They were fearsome equestrian warriors and thought of as "barbarians" by many neighboring cultures, but they produced some of the finest gold and bronze art objects of the ancient world.

Inspired by the original bronze fibula, I created this sterling silver brooch using the ancient process of lost wax casting. Starting with a hand-carved original model, each one is cast in silver, oxidized to bring out the details, and finished to a soft shine with a subtle texture befitting an ancient treasure. The sturdy nickel pin and mechanical clutch fasten it securely to your cloak as you ride into battle, or just to dress up your favorite hoodie.

• Stag measures 1 1/4" wide x 7/8" high (32 x 22 mm)
• Cast in sterling silver from a hand-carved original model
• Durable nickel pin and mechanical clutch

••• Please Note •••
If you have a nickel allergy and would like to order this brooch, please contact me before placing your order, and I can make a brooch for you with a nickel-free pin and clutch.

INTERNATIONAL CUSTOMERS: Please note that orders shipped to countries outside of the United States may be subject to import taxes, customs duties, and fees levied by the government of the destination country. You may be required to pay these charges upon delivery of your order.

Customs policies vary widely from country to country and are subject to frequent changes, so you may want to check with your local customs office for more information before ordering. Also, customs procedures may cause delays beyond the estimated delivery date. I cannot guarantee delivery of international orders by a specific date. Although most orders arrive within 7 to 14 days, I strongly recommend allowing at least 21 days for delivery and customs clearance if you need your order in time for a special occasion.

The full value of the order will be declared on the customs form. Please note that I cannot mark the item as a "gift"; this is not possible when using Etsy's shipping system, and it is a violation of Federal law.

I have no control over, or any way of predicting, the customs fees and procedures of the destination country.

Thanks for your understanding, and I truly appreciate your business!

Shipped and arrived quickly. The pendant is very well crafted and just what I was looking for! I like wearing multiple things on my neck, so the shorter leather necklace was perfect as well as it holds it higher up.

Beautiful work! This was a little birthday gift to myself as I've turned 29 last week. Shipped out quick and got it just today. Lovely packaging and definitely a beautifully designed pendant. I love that the leather cord necklace sent with it is of a very high quality with silver endings and clasp. Usually I worry about those if they are made of anything else. The length I chose was perfect for me as I like to layer my necklaces and this one is closest to my throat at the shortest length available. Definitely recommend this shop! Won't be the last time I come around. Thank you.<3
