Description

These stylish cufflinks are presented in a small cufflink box and include a small high quality photocard which has details of the planet on the reverse. The inside is left blank for you to write your own message or greetings. The "gems" are 16mm glass cabochons which are set into nickel free silver plated cufflinks.

Mercury was named after the Roman winged messenger of the gods but the exact date of its discovery is unknown as it pre-dates its first historical mention, one of the first being by the Sumerians around 3,000 years BC.
Mercury is the closest planet to the sun and is the smallest in our solar system being only slightly larger than our moon. A year on the planet lasts for 88 Earth days, but a day lasts for 59 Earth days.
Surprisingly, despite being closer to the sun, Mercury is not as hot as Venus, the surface which faces the Sun has temperatures of up to 427*C whilst the alternate side can be a cold as -173*C. this is due to the planet having no atmosphere to help regulate the temperature.
The surface of the planet has more craters than any other; asteroids and comets colliding into the planet caused these. The Caloris Basin is the largest impact crater on Mercury covering approximately 1,550 km in diameter and was discovered in 1974 by the Mariner 10 space probe. As the iron core of the planet cooled and contracted the surface became wrinkled, some of these "Lobate Scarps" can be up to a mile high and hundreds of miles long.
