Drinks all around! Here's a unique way to serve your favorite beverage. Four hand built squared-off cups nestle neatly into a hand built square tray, all finished in tones of dark orange, rich curry, deep black and antique white tones. Asymmetrical by design, this set has "unfinished" black edges and was glazed using a shino (pronounced, shee-noh) glaze.

Shino glazes are a family of glazes whose origins date back to 16th century Japan, and are popular for their carbon-trapping abilities. Carbon trapping—represented by the dark and speckled grey colors—is achieved by gas firing in reduction; that is, starving the internal kiln environment of oxygen. The bright orange color on the cups was achieved by tying plastic on the dried glaze. This causes the water in the glaze to evaporate at different rates and wicks one of the glaze's materials—soda ash—out from under the plastic and leaving a thinner layer of glaze. Shino is a fascinating glaze with endless possibilities!
