Sir Gawain, a great hero of Arthurian legend, was known as the "perfect knight" of King Arthurs round table. The pentangle of Gawains shield signifies his perfection, and power over evil.

The points of the pentangle represent the five virtues of chivalry, friendship, generosity, chastity, courtesy, and piety.

Of course the pentagram was used as a symbol by the Celts and Germanic people long before it was given it's christain interpretation with medieval liturature and the tales of King Arthurs Camelot. It was seen as a token of truth, the five points representing fire, earth, water, air, and spirit interlock to form an endless knot.

Sir Gawains Shield is approx. 10 inches in diameter. And measures 23 inches high with hanger and streamers. The streamers are made of bright red ribbons.

The last sheaf of wheat harvested was traditionally woven into a kind of talisman, to provide a home for the spirit of the field through the winter. Which would be released back to the field in the spring. When the last sheaf is cut, the dolly complete, the Festival begins!

Modern straw artists use the ancient techiques to make blessings for home, family and special occasions. Celebrate the season, and bless your home with abundance! Or give this weaving as the perfect house warming gift.

Wheat weaving appear fragile, but last very well. I have the first ones I made almost 30 years ago. They can be dusted with a feather, or for more figorous cleaning, can be swished in light suds, rinsed and dried in it's original shape.
