Vintage from the 1940s

980 silver

This is an early handwrought piece from Rafael Melendez; based on a pre-columbian design. It is made of 980 silver. The clasp is the vintage C-clasp. A lovely old brooch from the beginnings of Taxco's renewed importance with silver. Rafael Melendez began work with Spratling but left in 1939 when he decided to open his own shop. This is marked 980, Taxco and has his conjoined RM. It is 2-3/8" long; 13/16" wide. In very good condition. You could thread a thin silver chain or a velvet cord through the two end openings on top and wear this as a necklace also.
