Description

Peter Stoyan (1900-1979) A.O.C.A. (Associate of the Ontario College of Art),

A painter, graphic artist and illustrator, Peter Stoyanoff, born in Greece emigrated to Canada in 1914. He studied art in Toronto at the Ontario College of Art under some of Canada's most famous painters, George Reid, J. W. Beatty, Fred Haines and Arthur Lismer.

Beginning in the 1920’s he traveled quite extensively and exhibited his landscapes and city views during this time. The Ontario Society of Artists and the Royal Canadian Academy both began to include his works in their exhibitions from 1925.

Around 1930, Peter Stoyan visited New York City. He exhibited there for several years and worked mainly as an illustrator. His work from this early period is signed either, 'Stoyanoff' (his real name) or 'Stoin'. He then returned to Toronto and began signing his work, 'Peter Stoyan'. He remained there for most of his career, with the exception that he both lived and worked in the western provinces of Alberta and British Columbia during the late 1950's and early 1960's.
- Greg & Connie Peters (Biographers)

Peter Stoyan was a regular exhibitor with the O.S.A. (Ontario Society of Artists).

This lovely oil painting was created in 1951 with a subject matter of some rolling fields in the very beginnings of autumn. The painting reaches from the ground up to the sky with golden flowers at the bottom moving up through a dark wall of trees, (looking like earth-grown cherubs), across a meadow and up to a large autumn wall of trees and he finally marries those golden colors with a windy, blue autumn sky.

The main body of the frame is in good condition but the matting is stained and one wooden inner support on the left of the painting is missing.
