TITLE: AISLE of TOMBS ~ Lafayette Cemetery #1 ~ New Orleans, LA

A little history about the Lafayette Cemetery #1 .......
The first French settlers buried their dead under ground; but, it soon became clear that was not such a great idea. Each time the city flooded, coffins and bodies started to float to the surface of the wet earth. It was soon decided to bury the dead in above-ground crypts, a practice that was already quite common in Europe. A number of tombs have fallen into disrepair and depilated due to the periodic flooding. Building the crypts above ground not only protected the coffins from getting flooded; but it also allowed the reuse of the vaults. Many of the crypts built were to accommodate large family tombs where coffins were stacked several levels high. When a family ran out of space, the remains of the oldest coffin would be placed at the bottom of the tomb.

The cemetery was founded in 1833 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of Interior on Feb. 1, 1972.

What added to this photographic journey was the fact that it had just rained and it was very overcast. The extra dampness added a new level of texture and dimension to the stone work and tombs and grave sites.
