Made in Japan Relief Tea Cups - Hawaiian Scene - Red Stamp Made In Japan

Description

I found these gorgeous relief tea cups at an estate auction and, well, had to have them. The color of the blue is like the sky. Perfect actually since the relief is of various scenes in Hawaii - so the base color should look like a clear sky!

Each cup has a blue base that is white on half of it and as you turn the cup, you get a different scene from Hawaii. The scenes are in relief and beautifully painted. The saucer has each scene. There are no chips or cracks.

Now, here's the conundrum!

We have 3 red stamp Made in Japan tea cups. Red stamps are the oldest stamps post 1921 when the McKinnley Tariff Act went into place. All imports could no longer say "Nippon." During the occupation, Japanese imports were supposed to say Made in Occupied Japan. But that was essentially embarrassing and many imports coming out of Japan from 1947 to 1949 made it through with just the Made in Japan stamp - in Red. But in 1949 the US Customs office allowed Made in Japan, Made in Occupied Japan, and Occupied Japan to be used interchangeably - but the stamp had to be in BLACK.

So - how do we date these?? It is likely that these were from Occupied Japan - due to the subject matter meant to appeal to an American audience and were part of the ceramics that made it out without the full stamp. But it is also possible that these pre-date the Occupation. Since the Occupation stamp is what makes items more collectible, we are dating them to prior to the 1940s.

We will ship internationally but request that you contact us with a postal code for the most accurate rate. We want to make sure they get there safely so the box may be large which can increase the shipping rate.

Not only did I fall in love with the story behind finding this bit of treasure, but the pitcher itself. It's a wonderful old piece...chips and all !!!... I guess not everyone appreciates old, "imperfect" things (I, myself being one). What a joy to find a PICKER who does ! Thank you for shipping this beauty to me quickly, and allowing me to give it the home it really deserves. Bless you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
