November 2014
Mixed Media
Oil and Acrylic
Paint on Canvas
12" x 12"

This series began in July when I woke suddenly with a beautiful idea for a whole new body of work. I wanted to portray a diverse group of “everyday” women. Who is an “everyday” woman? A mother, teacher, hair stylist, artist, photographer, office worker, athlete, sister, pet owner, home maker, lab worker, nurse, model, student; absolutely EVERY woman is an “everyday” woman. I wanted to show that not only those who fit into the media’s version of ultimate beauty were beautiful. You don’t have to be thin, you don’t have to be blond, you don’t have to be 20; you just have to be you! Despite what the media tells us, all women; regardless of age, size, ethnicity, or personal style; are beautiful in their own unique way. With this concept in mind I put out a call for untouched photos (not professionally edited) to anyone who wanted to take part. The response was overwhelming. The names of those who submitted were drawn at random and soon my collection of 16 gorgeous Canadian women from all walks of life began to take shape. Using untouched photos of these ladies I captured their natural beauty using bright colours, symbolic iconic imagery, and an emphasis on each woman’s unique facial features. I hope this series expresses the beauty of all women and in so doing allow any woman viewing the series to see the beauty in herself.

This particular artwork features the stunning natural beauty of Dana McCool. Combining a soft realistic portrait of her with one of her favourite colours (green) and using a roman numeral spiral to symbolize her fascination with time travel, I hope to represent an aspect of her multifaceted female spirit.

The necklace is exactly like it is in the picture and although Malinda was on vacation when I ordered, she messaged to let me know that she would get to work as soon as she was off and it arrived soon after!

Everyone that walks into the room is immediately drawn to this painting. It really is stunning, and Malinda is a great talent. I feel honored to own this little piece of magic.
