Item details

Vintage from the 1950s

Materials

Metal, Chrome, Rubber, Plastic

This is an Olympia SM4 vintage portable typewriter in very good condition. The SM4, or Schreibmaschine Mittlegross 4, was introduced in the late 1950s as follow-up to Olympia's successful SM3. Both machine share the same basic design, with the SM4 coming with a few additional features not found with the SM3.

As with all my typewriters, I have cleaned, lubricated and polished this vintage typewriter, and it is ready to use.

**COSMETIC CONDITION**
Cosmetically, this forest/sage green manual typewriter is in very good condition. This SM4 has polished metal accents and forest green keys, as well as the original badge from the typewriter store that sold it. It is a beautiful mid-century design, and looks great anywhere you might want to display it.

The only cosmetic issue with this machine is that it appears to have been left too close to a heat source at one point as the space bar has warped slightly on the right side. The space bar there has a slight curve and blistering, but it is only noticeable upon closer inspection. The damage does not affect functionality, so it is a cosmetic flaw.

This machine does not come with a carrying case.

Also, the photos here are a bit dated as this was a machine I've had for a long time and which I hadn't planned on selling. I will update the listing with new (current) photos soon.

**MECHANICAL CONDITION**
Mechanically, this working typewriter is in excellent condition. The machine performs wonderfully, with a clean, crisp typing action that is so emblematic of the Olympia line. The platen (roller) has hardened some with age, but it is not so hard that the machine leaves significant indentations in the page. As with other Olympias I've had, this typewriter has a precise, tight feel to it.

**INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING**
I do ship outside the continental United States, so if you live outside that area, contact me and I can give you a shipping quote.

**RECOMMENDED BUYER**
I believe this typewriter is the ideal machine for a writer who wants to write with a working manual typewriter, or a collector who needs a quality Olympia SM4. A designer who wants a green typewriter or mid-century piece would also find this machine a good fit. Every Olympia I've had has been a delight to type with, and this SM4 is no different. If you know typewriters, you already know the quality of this machine. If you're new to typewriters, you might find it hard to go to anything else once you've experienced an Olympia.

**MORE TYPEWRITERS / CUSTOM ORDERS**
I have a lot of typewriters, most of which I'm still in the process of refurbishing. If you want a specific machine, or don't see what you like here or in my shop, just let me know.

Thank you, and feel free to contact me with any questions you might have.

Returns and exchange details

I sell vintage and antique typewriters that are no longer made, some of which are 100 years old or more. As much as I'd love to be able to tell you that they will always be problem-free and last forever, I can't, because they won't.

Older machines can develop problems without notice, even if they're properly maintained and loved. I promise to accurately describe, photograph, or video any typewriter I sell. If you want additional photos or have questions about anything, all you have to do is ask. You can also inspect the machines in person if you are in the Kansas City area.

So, to make a long story short, I will accept most returns, but I do ask that you pay for return shipping. If your typewriter does not work as it should upon arrival, I'll accept a return unless it was sold as a display model. Also, if you do experience a problem, many times there is a simple repair that will solve it. I can often walk you through the repair so you don't have to send the typewriter back.

Shipping policies

Unless otherwise agreed to or specified, I'll ship all typewriters via USPS, FedEx, or UPS at my discretion. I will use the method that is most economical for my buyers, and will ship to anywhere in the continental United States.

If you are located outside of the United States, please contact me before making a purchase. I can usually arrange shipping, but I don't want to make any promises I cannot keep.

As far as packaging goes, shipping typewriters is notoriously problematic for some people. Typewriters have heavy moving parts (the carriages) that can be easily damaged if not properly secured. I lock the carriages on all shipped typewriters if they have that feature, but I may also secure them with additional safety measures. I use a variety of techniques to make sure your machine gets to you in exactly the same condition it was in when I boxed it up.

Please be advised that some typewriters are very heavy, and can weigh 40 pounds or more. These heavier machines naturally have higher shipping costs associated with them.

Etsy keeps your payment information secure. Etsy shops never receive your credit card information.
I accept credit cards, PayPal, or Etsy gift cards. If you absolutely must have a machine and cannot pay me with either of these methods, please contact me so we can try to work out a solution. I know how strong the pull of a vintage manual typewriter can be, and I'll do my best to make sure I get your baby to you.

Additional policies

A lot of vintage stuff, especially typewriters, is beautiful and awesome. But I suppose you already knew that.
