Hardcover 318 pages
Measures 12 x 9 inches, Weighs 3 pounds 5 ounces

Condition: Good.
Frayed corners, lightly bumped corners. Has a bit of pen mark on the cover (covers the lower half of the "f" in the title) Endpapers are yellowed.
Pages are remarkably intact, clean and bright, just faintly off-white.
Text is crisp and illustrations are clear and bright.
A rare book.

Excerpts from the book:
preface ..."The approach to the study of each artist has differed with the subject. Some chapters focus upon purely technical practices; others emphasize training and experience; still others present a single important phase of the artists' work. Viewed as a whole, this book endeavors to give a comprehensive pictures of contemporary illustration in its various ramifications.

...Illustration is the goal of a great majority of students in our art schools. Its allurements are many. Not least of them is the fabulous income that awaits the winner of a top place in a very lucrative profession. Even those who do not reach the highest peak know that there are good incomes for thousands on the lower levels. What is not sufficiently appreciated is that the gold in illustration, like the ore in the depths of the earth, is not so easily brought to light. If the stores of the illustrators in this book demonstrate the extent of training, industry and fanatical devotion that lies hidden behind their facile art on the printed page, I shall feel that one very useful purpose has been served in their publication."

Personal and professional stories give us valuable insight to the artist, their mind and ways. This is not a how-to book, rather a succinct and interesting insight on the creative drive and or methods of each artist.

The Forty Featured Artists:
Alajalov, Constantini / Artzybasheff, Boris / Atherton, John / Baker Ernest Hamilton / Biggs, Walter / Bobri V. / Cady, Harrson / Cooper, Fred / Cooper, Mario / Cornwell, Dean / D'Alessio, Gregory / Davis, Floyd / Dohanos, Stevan / Dorne, Albert / Dunn, Harvey / Erickson, Carl / Gannam, John / Grohe, Glenn / Giusti, George / Hay, Stuart / Helck, Peter / Hurst, Earl Oliver / Klett, Walter / Lawson, Robert / Metzi, Ervine / Morgan, Wallace / Oberhardt, William / Pitz, Henry C. / Price, George / Prohaska, Ray / Riggs, Robert / Ragan, Leslie / Rockwell, Norman / Sawyers, Martha / Scott, Howard / Sewell, Amos / Teague, Donald / Watson, Aldren A. / Wortman, Denys / Wyeth, N.C.

(Most illustrations are black and white.)
