There is nothing more wonderful than a poem by Eugene Field except maybe one that has been illustrated by Maxfield Parrish. This wonderful print called “The Fly-Away Horse” is from the 1904 version of “Poems of Childhood” by Eugene Field (1850 – 1895), illustrated by Maxfield Parrish (1870 – 1966) and published by Charles Scribner’s Sons of New York. Field was a newspaper journalist before turning his hand to poetry where he became well known for his light hearted poems for children. Parrish had an artistic career that lasted for more than half a century and helped to shape the Golden Age of Illustration and the future of American visual arts. He devised many innovative techniques which no other major artist has successfully copied. Books illustrated by Parrish are highly sought after by collectors and many of his illustrations are so popular they are still reproduced and found in books printed today.

While the book “Poems of Childhood” continues to be published today, the soft muted colors and age of this print make it unique in appearance and texture. The distinctive Parrish style offers a glimpse into art and illustrations created at the turn of the century. His art features dazzlingly luminous colors; the color Parrish blue was named in acknowledgement. The print definition and quality are typical of that time period as well, lacking much of the sharp clarity that is available today with offset printing but adds timeless charm to this beautiful image.

There is slight uniform yellowing of the paper around the actual image as well as some wear at the page edges in line with what you would expect of a print that is 105 years old. The rough edge from the binding has been removed but that is the only "altering" that has taken place (the interior edge is trimmed).

Prints are carefully mounted on mats to simplify framing after purchase and to protect the print during shipment. All mat materials are acid and lignin free, the actual print is not archival safe. The original book measured approximately 7 x 9-1/4” but the book plate is being sold custom matted to fit in a 9x12 standard frame. While it appears the matting is unbalanced that is only due to my limitations as a photographer – it is uniformly matted to match on all sides.

Antique book illustrations are always the perfect decorating choice for any room in your home or office. They also make great children’s gifts or for a baby showers as they are always unique and unusual.
