Description

"Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag, Knaresborough"

size 25.5cm x 19.4cm

This is a watercolour and pen drawing of the Chapel of Our Lady of the Crag, Knaresborough. Originally built by "John the Mason" in 1408, the Chapel was carved out of the rock face as a thanksgiving for his sons life, having almost being killed by falling rock. The Knight guarding the Chapel was created at the same time although it has periodically been restored due to natural erosion.
The Chapel can be found a short walk down Abbey Road, Knaresborough, where it is maintained by St Mary's Catholic Church. The Chapel is open to the public from 14.00 - 16.00 during the summer months.

Knaresborough is a pretty market town in the beautiful Yorkshire Dales. Once home to the prophetess Mother Shipton, the town is steeped in folklore and legend. Walking along the waterside you can take in the views of the railway viaduct, Mother Shipton's Cave and the Petrifying well. Further along down Abbey Road, you can visit the charming Chapel of Our lady, which is carved out of the crag and the secluded cave once inhabited by Saint Robert.
