Description

EUCHRE CARDS FOR THE BLIND is a program to enrich the lives of blind and visually impaired individuals through a simple card game. Sales of EUCHRE CARDS FOR THE BLIND will fund free distribution of cards to those who serve the blind and visually impaired community*. EUCHRE CARDS FOR THE BLIND include a standard euchre deck (24 cards), instructions for using the cards and instructions and rules for playing euchre, and score keeping cards. The euchre deck is made from standard playing cards which have been notched on the edges to indicate the suit and denomination of the card. Standard playing cards are made into Euchre decks by removing the 2,3,4,5,6,7, &8. Normal euchre rules are followed with the exception of audibly announcing ones card as it is played. The notch system is very easy to learn. Completely blind card players have been able to learn the notch system and play euchre with 10-15 minutes of instruction.
Related Story and Background: Recently an individual who had gone blind later in life was going to a counselor at a center for the blind. When the counselor asked her what she missed most from the days when she could see, she responded that she really missed playing cards (specifically euchre) with her friends. The counselor had just heard about euchre cards which worked for the blind and explained this to his client. She was brought to tears when she tried the cards which she easily was able to use. She is now happily back at the card table. The inventor of the euchre cards for the blind is legally blind and developed the system to notch the cards 7 years ago when his father lost the last of his vision. After a few years of tinkering, the euchre cards were refined to work well with a SIMPLE system of small notches on the edges. The inventor's father, who is in his 90's now plays euchre regularly. Because of the inspiring stories above, an effort is being made to distribute the cards through sales and charitable means.
AN ALTERNATIVE TO BRAILLE. Some blind individuals are able to use playing cards marked with braille dots. Braille cards have been used for many years, but have their limitations. Braille cards, although used by many, don’t work for many blind individuals, especially seniors. Braille is difficult for older individuals to learn and many have difficulty feeling Braille dots due to neuropathy in their finger tips.
CONTRIBUTIONS TO RECREATION FOR THE BLIND COMMUNITY: *The Euchre Cards for the Blind project was started with the primary goal of enriching the lives of blind and visually impaired individuals. The sale of decks of cards is a means to this end. FOR EVERY DECK OF EUCHRE CARDS SOLD ON THIS SITE, A DECK WILL BE DONATED TO AGENCIES OR ORGANIZATIONS WHICH SERVE THE BLIND AND VISUALLY IMPAIRED. Organizations who serve the blind or visually impaired community may contact the seller through this site to order multiple decks at cost. Training or education related to playing euchre will be available.
