Mason Bees are the perfect easy solution to your early season pollinating needs. Did you know that only 250 mason bees do the work of 20,000 honey bees? It takes only 3 mason bees to pollinate an entire apple tree, these truly are the work horses of the garden. My habitats provide a quality, good looking and functional way to provide you with all that you need to successfully raise your own bees. Mason bees are solitary, docile, and virtually maintenance free. The Bee Block you see in the pictures is what the female bees make their nest in. The holes have to be 5/16"and at least 6" deep. The female starts at the back of the hole, she lays female larvae and then male. She deposits a larvae provides it with pollen, seals the larvae and repeats the process. While in the tube the larvae seal themselves in a small cocoon and it's these cocoons that you harvest around late Oct. or Nov. You can take the block put it in an unheated garage until the spring. You just put the block back in the house in early spring and let nature take it's course or to ensure the best chance at success you can harvest the cocoons. Harvesting has two advantages, it keeps your babies in a controlled environment and you can dismantle and clean the block. Harvesting is very simple, just remove the wing nut and take each section of block off one at a time. You gently remove any cocoons and place them in a small container with a piece of damp sponge for humidity and put them in a drawer in your refrigerator. The cocoons stay dormant allowing you to control when you want them to hatch. In the spring you replace your clean block in the house and put the cocoons in the attic where they will hatch and immediately start pollinating your fruits and vegetables. It's really that simple and your choice to raise these wonderful native insects helps our environment and you to raise better food for your family. I include basic instructions with the habitat but when you buy one of my habitats you get lifetime support. You can e-mail or call me on the phone, my number is on the brochure.
