Description

The Periwinkle Star memory quilt is a design that works well when you have limited baby clothing or other clothing to use in the quilt. It works with just about any clothing color combinations. This design works equally well with baby boys or baby girls clothing. The Periwinkle Star quilt has it roots in tradition but yet still feels fresh.

Each appliqued star is 8” inches in diameter. Clothing is raw edge appliqued on to either a bright white or off-white kona quilting cotton. The raw edge applique technique exposes the unfinished edge of the fabric. When this technique is used with knit fabrics it creates a soft edge along the applique edge. When it is used with woven fabrics the fabric edges will be sewn using zig-zag stitch so that the edges do not fray.

It is quilted with straight line pattern that follows the lines of the triangles. Typically the areas with clothing are minimally quilted or left alone so that they stand out against the quilted sections. I use Quilters Dream 100% cotton batting for its heirloom quality and I think it’s the perfect balance of loft and softness.

The backing material is chosen based on the clothing provided. Dots and small geometric print fabric are one of my favorite choices for backing as they complement the front of the quilt without competing and have a timeless quality. Custom backing options are available for an additional fee.

CLOTHING RECOMMENDATIONS
Knits and woven fabrics work best. No sweaters, knitted items, fleece , hats, spandex swimsuit materials, vinyl or fabric that easily snag. Ideally 100% cotton fabrics work best. Synthetic materials can breakdown over time and have a negative impact on the heirloom quality of the quilt. Pajamas and onesies are some of our favorite clothing to work with. It often comes in coordinating sets with adorable patterns.

Important!
This design may not work well with clothing that has a large applique or “saying” printed across the front if your desire is to use this part of the clothing in the quilt. Of course there are always exceptions which can be discussed if a piece of special clothing needs to be considered.

TIPS FOR CHOOSING YOUR CLOTHING:
As with many modern design ideas, we like to apply the concept of “less is more” to our designs. Our goal is to capture to essence of childhood in each quilt while creating something that that fits in modern décor and lifestyles.

Select by clothing that brings up the strongest memories or that you have an emotional attachment to such as what your baby was wearing the first time he smiled, the first time you heard “mama” or “dada”, those first few steps and the cherished snuggle time reading bedtime books.

If everything is important feels important then choosing by color combinations or print is a fun way to pair it down. Analogous color palettes are always pleasing to the eye. Examples of this are (green, blue-green, blue, blue-violet) and (blue-violet, violet, red-violet, pinks).

I absolutely love the final product and it hangs over my daughter's bed. She is 3 now and the quilt is beautiful to look at when putting her to bed - reminds me of her baby days which make me smile. Some of the best money I've ever spent. Thank you Schonie!

Lovely use of baby clothes that had been saved for years. Wonderful handiwork with a very artful eye. The owner of LittleOneQuilts asked for input on backing fabric and final OK on how she had laid out the pattern. The quilt exceeded my expectations. I'm about to order another...

I love the care and attention to detail that went into creating this beautiful piece of art. I searched high and low for many years for a beautiful quilt to remember my children's early childhood by. I just adore the sofistication of this design. I personally chose the most memorable fabrics from my kids cherished clothes. Each step of the way is carefully explained and thoughtfully carried through. Gather up your cutie pie's clothes and have Schonie create your memorable masterpiece. You will be delighted, I know I am. Thank you Schonie!
