This is a beautiful worn Doctor's Bag. It is a Dopp Built Doctor's Bag from the late fifties or early sixties. It is in pretty good condition for its age. The lock still works and the key comes with the bag. It is made by a reputable manufacturer out of top grain cowhide. It has brass hardware and locks. There are three partitions within the bag. This particular bag was used by a renowned medical school professor when he was teaching at the University of Alabama in the early sixties. (History below).

Like most bags this age it bears the marks of experience. There are scuffs, gouges and watermarks. There are two small rips on the leather liners on either end of the bag. There is also a small area of separation between the leather on the top side of one flap of the bag and the metal frame.

Although this doctor's bag is over 50 years old and shows signs of it sage it is still functional. The bag opens and closes with ease. The bag locks and unlocks and keeps its contents secure.

HISTORICAL INFORMATION

Dopp Bilt doctor bags were made by Charles Doppelt, a German leather goods maker from Chicago. In the early 1900's he invented a leather toiletry pouch he called Dopp Kits which eventually became known as Dopps. Doppelt scored a contract with the US Army during WWII to provide the toiletry pouches to millions of American GIs. The bags became a hit, and demand for Dopp kits soared when American men returned home from war.

This particular Dopp Bilt Doctors bag has its own unique history. The monogram is H V Murdaugh, Jr MD. on Glenview Circle, Birmingham, Alabama. When you google Dr. Murdaugh you discover he was a distinguished Professor who taught at University of Alabama School of Medicine, University of Washington Medical School, Duke University Medical School and the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. Information found in his scholarly papers establishes he was a Medical Professor at the University of Alabama in 1961. The address monogram on this bag is in very close proximity to the University of Alabama.
