Edward Gorey (1925-2000) was an American writer and artist. Gorey lived in New York City from 1953 to 1960, where he worked for Art Department of Doubleday Anchor. It was here he illustrated book covers, and also added illustrations to the text. Some of his works include Bram Stoker's Dracula, and War of the Worlds by H.G Wells.

Later on, Gorey produced artwork and covers for many children's books. Many of his future works consisted of a rather ominous feel, and created quite a cult following. Most of his books are found in humor and surrealism art sections.

In 1977, he received a Tony Award for Best Costume Design for the Broadway production of Dracula. In 1980, on PBS, Gorey's animated series Mystery! gave him huge popularity.
