Description

Awesome find. This is a mechanical pencil with the Pledge of Allegiance written on the side. In doing research - from 1923 to 1954 the words "under God were not in the pledge. As showing in the pictures, the pencil is in great condition with no wearing off on the pledge but the eraser has been pushed in a little too far and there are two little cracks in the plastic or celluloid at the end of the pencil. The lead works fine coming out and going back in. A great addition to a collection of Americana
This is just one of the great advertising mechanical pencils that we have listed for this estate on our site.

Will be sent in padded envelope inside of cardboard to avoid damage.

A little history of timing on the addition of UNDER GOD to this - In 1923, the words, "the Flag of the United States of America" were added. At this time it read:

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."

In 1954, in response to the Communist threat of the times, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today. Bellamy's daughter objected to this alteration. Today it reads:

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
