Handmade Haitian handicraft metal art sculpture made from recycled oil drums.
An excellent example of Haitian oil-drum art, from a lid or base. This piece is of three mermaids in various sizes with long flowing hair and several fish.
It measures 24" diameter and is in excellent condition in shades of brown, silver and bronze.
Great for indoors, patio decor or garden art. Ethnic folk art. Nice addition to a world art, folkart collection. Ready to hang.
Oil drums are their raw material. The process of converting oil drums into sculptures is both a tribute to man's imagination and resourcefulness in the face of economic need. The artist first removes both ends from the drum, which are used to create smaller scuptures the drum is them stuffed with straw and set on fire to remove oil residue. When cool it is sliced down the side and flattened into a 4'x6' metal canvas. The artist then draws the image with chalk and with hammer and chisel the design is cut out and the sculpture is born.
