Description

Handmade Haitian handicraft metal art sculpture made from recycled oil drum. This is a mid-90's piece.
This oil drum lid or base piece is of two rooster/cockerels during a cock fight. The piece is rustic in nature. It is in varying shades of dark brown/bronze almost black in color. It measures 24" in diameter. The piece has what seems to be a signature, the letters J and S.
Great for patio decor or garden art. Ethnic folk art. Nice addition to a world art, folkart collection. Ready to hang with a couple of nails and a hammer.
Oil drums are their raw material. The process of converting oil drums into sculptures is both a tribute to man's imagination and resourcefulness in the face of economic need. The artist first removes both ends from the drum, which are used to create smaller scuptures the drum is them stuffed with straw and set on fire to remove oil residue. When cool it is sliced down the side and flattened into a 4'x6' metal canvas. The artist then draws the image with chalk and with hammer and chisel the design is cut out and the sculpture is born.
