Handmade Haitian metal art sculpture made from recycled oil drum.
Great for inside or on a patio. Wonderful folk-art piece of a mermaid with turtle and fish. It measures 54" x 7" Probably a mid-90's piece. It is nicely sculpted showing the scales of her tail and is signed by the artist, with a nice brown, silver and bronze patina. It is in excellent condition. Couple of nails and it is ready to hang.
Oil drums are their raw material. The process of converting oil drums into sculptures is both a tribute to man's imagination and resourcefulness in the face of economic need. The artist first removes both ends from the drum, which are used to create smaller scuptures the drum is them stuffed with dried foliage and set on fire to remove oil residue. When cool it is sliced down the side and flattened into a 4'x6' metal canvas. The artist then draws the image with chalk and with hammer and chisel the design is cut out and the sculpture is born.
