Description

Sheep shearing and fiber festival season is upon us, and my obsession is your gain. It is no secret to my friends and family that I love to process and spin raw sheep fleeces. Because I currently have more fleeces than I could ever hope to spin in my lifetime, I have decided to spread the love around!

I love to hand process raw, unwashed fleece into clean, soft, fluffy fiber. If you haven't spun from a hand processed fleece before, you will be amazed at how soft and bouncy the yarn is. Batts can be spun many different ways from woolen to semi-worsted, depending on spinning technique and desired yarn.

The fiber for these huge 17 x 38 inch batts is from a gorgeous Romney fleece. The fleece is lustrous and silky, with a beautiful wavy crimp. The staple length on the locks was 5 inches. It is probably around a 27 micron count and would make wonderful socks or mittens. Spun in lace weight would make a lovely shawl yarn. These batts are very light and airy.. This fleece would be beautiful spun semi-worsted.

This listing is for one hand processed batt for a total weight of 3.8 oz, 108 g.
Batt size: 17in X 38in
100% hand processed Romney

I have more of these batts ready to order. Use the drop down arrow to order the quantity you desire.

I have more of this fleece available, so send me a message if you would like me to card more up for you.

All of my natural hand-processed batts start out as raw unwashed fleece that I have either purchased directly from the farm or from a local to me fleece and fiber festival. I then sort through or "skirt" the fleece to remove any unwanted poopy bits, yucky wool, or hay (VM). The wool is carefully and gently washed in small batches and laid out to dry. Then to prepare the fleece for the drum carder, I hand pick each lock and tease them open, or I flick them open with a flicker brush. The fiber is sent through the carder three times to ensure a smooth and well blended batt. This is truly a labor of love!
