Chaparral has potent and long-lasting anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects in the treatment of arthritis. Applied to the skin, chaparral can have a remarkable healing effect on eczema, herpes, cold sores, psoriasis, and contact dermatitis. Chaparral is one the oldest living inhabitants of our planet, and has a long history of use. The American Indians of the Southwest have used this plant for centuries - including sunscreen for themselves and their animals. The major traditional use of chaparral in Mexican herbalism is as a bath or liniment to relieve the inflammation and pain of arthritis.

St. John's wort was known to such ancient authorities on medicinal plants as Dioscorides and Hippocrates; indeed it is described and recommended as a useful remedy in all of the herbals down through the Middle Ages. St John's wort is effective as a compress for dressing wounds. In the Middle Ages it was commonly used to heal deep sword cuts. The red oil is an excellent antiseptic. Externally, it is used for wounds and burns and to relieve cramp and nerve pain.

An aromatic perennial herb belonging to the family Hypericaceae, produces golden yellow flowers that seem to be particularly abundant on June 24, the day traditionally celebrated as the birthday of John the Baptist, the plant is commonly known as St. John's wort. If you pinch the leaves or the petals they give out a reddish purple stain- the "blood of St. John". St. John's wort acquires a reddish color after standing in sunlight for several weeks in oil. Applied externally to relieve inflammation and promote healing.

St John's Wort is under the celestial sign Leo, and the dominion of the Sun. There are many ancient superstitions regarding this herb. Its name hypercum is derived from the Greek that means 'over an apparition', a reference to the belief that the herb was so obnoxious to evil spirits that a whiff of it would cause them to fly. If you pinch the leaves or the petals they give out a reddish purple stain- the "blood of St. John". Keeping this herb in your garden will protect you from fairy trickery. Carrying a few stems of the foliage was an old way to avoid being "fairy-led", or lost and confused while wandering through the local enchanted forest.
