BACK STORY
The lotus flower is one of the most significant symbols of the Buddhist and Hindu religions. In Hindu Bali, where Buddhism has also had a big influence, this beautiful bloom can be found in abundance, both in art and in actuality.

Known as “padma” in Sanskrit, the pink flower is considered to be the supreme lotus and as such is reserved for the highest deities, including the Great Buddha himself, who is often depicted sitting on a lotus.

In Buddhism, the lotus is an icon of purity and the pattern of its growth is said to signify “the progress of the soul from the primeval mud of materialism, through the waters of experience, and into the bright sunshine of enlightenment.”

For Hindus, the lotus flower is a symbol of eternity, plenty and good fortune.

The roots or rhizomes of the plant are often used as a vegetable in Asian cuisine and should be eaten by a lot more of us because they've been found to be rich in dietary fibre, vitamin C, potassium, thiamin, riboflavin, vitamin B6, phosphorus, copper, and manganese, while being very low in saturated fat. The roots are also used in traditional Asian herbal medicine.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“You Yourself are the water, You Yourself are the fish, and You Yourself are the net. You Yourself cast the net, and You Yourself are the bait. You Yourself are the lotus, unaffected and still brightly-colored in hundreds of feet of water. You Yourself liberate those who think of You for even an instant.” ~ Sri Guru Granth Sahib
