Item details

Vintage from the 1910s

Materials

glass, brass, leather

This pair of Opera Glasses by Lemaire, Paris saw service during the First World War. The British Government, short of supplies, asked the British people for all kinds desperately needed supplies, which, if they survived, would be returned after the war. This pair survived and were returned.

They bear the British Army's Broad Arrow mark, as well as a serial number connecting them to the donor, and a class number, 6S, which in this case means unusual design. I believe that means they were opera glasses rather than binoculars or field glass more in keeping with military issue.

They are pebble grain leather covered on lacquered brass, with (possibly bakelite or vulcanite) eyecups marked Lemaire Fabt (which I believe is short for Fabricant= manufacturer) Paris.

They are in very good condition, with clear, unclouded lenses are probably about 4 power; and are fitted to a leather case with silk interior. There are minor issues, such as rubbed leather etc but nothing serious.
