Welsh Oak & Ash Double Bed, Custom Made

Description

This double bed is handmade from unique reclaimed Oak and fantastically beautiful Ash and Sycamore wood. Before working it into a piece of furniture, I carefully select, mill and season the Ash and Sycamore myself here at the Flowering Elbow workshop.

Timber and the inspiration for the bed designs come from the small sustainablly managed woodlands on the steep Welsh hills surrounding my workshop.

Like being in the woods, this bed nourishes the senses. From the completely unique fissures in the aged oak and the ‘live edged’ headboard to the painstakingly smoothed sycamore rails, this bed is beautiful to look at precisely because it is so fascinating to touch.

This bed is made to last generations being of substantially thick hardwoods. It is also supremely functional, utilising a custom designed and made hidden bolting system, that allows partial disassembly for transport. The supports at the foot of the bed are set back from the corners, which reduces toe stubbyness. The headboard is made from a beautiful slab framed with gently outward curving and tapered oak posts.

I put my heart into it, and don't rush making a bed. Each is an individual and is made to order. The bed shown is a standard double but I can make any size, up to and beyond king.

The bed is finished with durable environmentally friendly wax oil that preserves the tactile beauty of the piece, without ‘plasticifying’ the wood.

When you buy a piece of furniture from me, you support a way of making that goes from the very beginning (tree planting), and is sensitive to the natural eco-systems that uphold us. You also support an ethos of making that is committed to sharing skills and the joy of making things (see the Flowering Elbow blog to get a flavour of this).

I can't recommend Stephen enough!

I originally enquired about the arrow table and was disappointed to find out that it had already been sold. However Stephen discussed the possibility of making another coffee table with another suitable piece of wood.

Stephen is a truly talented craftsman and has the ingenuity to use materials that people no longer wants or requires and then turns them into stunning pieces of furniture. I love the fact that every little bit of this coffee table has a story behind it. From the Ash tree from his parents farm, to the pews from Aberystwyth university.

The coffee table itself is beautiful and a real statement piece to the lounge. It's easy to maintain for everyday living and feel exceptionally well made.
