This is a beautiful golden British Tan Coach Wall Street Briefcase style number 5240. The designation 'LEATHERWARE'' is under the 'Coach' ID on the creed. The registration number on this bag is: 0867-214. This information allows the experts to declare this bag was manufactured sometime between the late 1970's and 1994. [ See 'Date Detective' Section below.]
The 1990 Coach Holiday Catalog had this to say about the Wall Street Briefcase:
"Wall Street Briefcase
No. 5240 $360 [ $670 in 2015 dollars]
Divided Double Gusseted main compartment accommodates 5" of legal size (8" x 14" ) files. Two front pockets under leather lined flap. Full length outside back pocket. Inside zipper pocket. Brass buckle closures. Reinforced leather handle.
Dimensions: 17 inches by 11 inches by 5 inches. Available in black, British tan, burgundy, mahogany, and mocha. Pictured in British Tan"
This is really a terrific trial case, executives briefcase or sales rep's case because it carries much more than the typical Coach bag type case. Beneath the front flap, the gusseted pockets organize bulky items such as your glasses, Laptop, Electronic Notebook, E Reader, 'Smart Phone, IPad, Kindle, or similar sized electronic devices. The full length outside back pocket provides quick access to newspapers, airline tickets and other travel necessities such as your laptop and smart phone. The roomy 5 inch wide legal-size interior is perfect for the busy trial attorney, executive or sales person who has much to carry to do their jobs. Please note this case was not sold with a strap and is not designed to use a carrying strap.
Condition of this case:
This case is in very good condition. However, this bag has gained character over time in the form of minor scuffs and scratches that have merged with it over time to give it a worn experienced patina that will overpower any bright new shiny briefcase your peers may be carrying. In addition there are some pen marks on the bag, the largest of which are on the inside of the front flap and not very visible since the flap is often down. There is also a small separation issue on the top of one of the interior gussets. However this does not affect the structural integrity of the bag.
Production Date and Place Detective Work:
A part of the joy of owning a vintage Coach product is that you can do some detective work on line to determine the history of the bag you own. As noted above The designation 'LEATHERWARE'' is under the 'Coach' ID on the creed and the registration number on this bag is: 0868-214. This information establishes the bag was manufactured sometime after Coach identified every bag as made in NYC in the 1970's up to 1994 when Coach began implementation of the orderly and meaningful creed serial number system that identifies every bag by month & year of production, place produced and style number. This bag was created in a factory in the United States, after Coach had expanded outside of New York City to meet a growing demand for the bags that simply could not be accommodated by the factory in New York.
