This is my interpretation of the Hamsa Hand, an ancient symbol of protection found in countless cultures around the world on every continent. Although it first appeared in Paleolithic cave dwellers, it is a true panicon or pan-icon, found on every continent including the ancient cultures of Mesopotamia and New World, and both ancient and contemporary Arabic and Israeli cultures. Known as the Hand-of-Mary, Hand of Fatima, Hand of Miriam, Hand of Venus (Aphrodite), or Hand-of-the-All-Goddess, it has frequently had a strong connection to the female experience. As a Buddhist symbol it represents the Buddha's gesture (mudrā) of teaching and protection.

I RESONATE MOST WITH THE TIBETAN MEANING OF PROTECTION FROM FEAR ITSELF.

This is a Slide Bag- the lid is individually designed to fit the body of the bag like the lid of a box. The straps pass through the top of the lid and are then attached to the body of the bag. The lid "slides" on the strap.

One at a time, each bag is wet molded over a casting of an original sculpture, set with heat, airbrushed with traditional leather dyes, and waxed and polished. Because it is handled and rubbed so many times- the molding process itself is done by rubbing the leather over molds with fingers and tools for finer detail ( much like a tombstone rubbing), and because each pice of leather is SO different, each bag develops a unique feel and is one of a kind. The shading is produced by a technique I have developed of airbrushing leather dyes in such a way that the dye accumulates in the low spots and has a lighter concentration in the high spots.

This particular bag is shown in antique chocolate, but it is also available by order in solid black, antique black, mahogany, pumpkin, brick, purple, cranberry, berry blend (combination of purple, fushia, and cranberry) and navy. Each of these colors is also available with the shading shown here to produce an "antique effect". I am partial to the antique effect because the sculptural relief is amplified.

Please contact me directly so I can give more specific details when ordering other colors.
