Description

The Gorgon Medusa (Necklace and/or Wall Sculpture)

This necklace features my own sculpted polymer clay centerpiece, strung with red jasper, snowflake obsidian, howlite, and unakite natural stone beads on nylon-coated 39-strand twisted wire cable, with rugged silver-tone base metal findings. I sculpted the face, snakes, and background piece of the centerpiece, and made the "hangers" on each side of the centerpiece out of heavy steel wire and embedded them into the piece.

One side of my Medusa sculpture's face is prettier than the other, representing different sides of one's personality. I don't necessarily mean those sides to be "good and evil," just different dimensions, each with its own purposes, strengths, and weaknesses. (Medusa was a character in ancient Greek mythology; look her up if you're not familiar with her.)

Each side of the necklace is constructed to be twisted. The necklace is about 23 1/2" (60 cm) long. The centerpiece is about 3 1/4" wide by 2 1/2" tall, and about 3/4" deep. In metric units that's about 8 cm wide by 6 cm tall by 2 cm deep.

With its sizable centerpiece and all of those stone beads the necklace weighs 5.15 oz.

I use strong, high-quality polymer clay, though these snakes do stick out from the surface of the sculpted centerpiece, so this isn't a piece you want to wear your seatbelt over. Polymer clay is sensitive to abrasion, and you will want to avoid hard knocks or pressure against the snakes to avoid breakage.

This comes in a cotton-filled gift box. You could also pound a couple of nails in the wall and hang it as a wall sculpture.
