Additional Information:

The Craftsman
Timothy Van Cleave developed through the talented hands of renowned master wood turner Jack Straka to become one of Hawaii’s premier wood turners. Born and raised in Hawai`i, Tim was introduced to Jack by his grade school shop teacher where he began to hone the technique and aggressiveness needed to “turn” out high quality, unique pieces of art. A retired U.S. Navy Seabee, Tim’s service took him to Sicily, Italy, Japan, Greece, Bermuda and the Philippines. This worldwide travel has allowed Tim to use ancient Roman sculptures, Michelangelo’s masterpieces, picturesque Oriental settings and the wonders of the natural landscape to enhance his ability in creating new designs. Accentuating the mystique of the female form and maintaining simplicity and smoothness is the challenge of every piece- from the more traditional bowls to platters, goblets, pens and coffee scoops. Having been fortunate enough to get an early, quality start in the craft of wood turning, Tim can only hope there is enough time to fully explore what awaits in the coming years.

The Woods
Koa, a dramatically grained Hawaiian wood, varies in tones from deep rosy brown to gold. It is a major component of the native upland forest, and was used by Hawaiians to make their calabashes (bowls), weapons and their indispensable canoes.
Milo, a native Hawaiian shoreline tree, was a popular shade tree amongst the Hawaiian peoples and is said to have been planted all around the house of King Kamehameha I at Waikiki. Somewhat more rare than Koa, Milo is beautifully grained deep brown with high contrasts of blond, which are occasionally edged with tints of red.
Most Van Cleave wares are crafted from Koa and Milo, though Tim has artfully used Ohia, Kou, Norfolk Pine, Mango, Macadamia Nut, Cinnamon, Kamani, Hau, Olive, Portuguese Cypress, Lychee and others.

Van Cleave wares can be found in select art galleries and gift shops across the State of Hawai`i. Prized as collection items and admired for their craftsmanship and roots on the Big Island, Van Cleave wares also make excellent gifts. Contact Tim to collaborate on the perfect unique Hawaiian heirloom to commemorate your special occasion.
