Description

Lovely handmade christening baby gown first worn in 1829. Made of a featherweight cotton lawn, this gown has a bodice panel embellished with hand sewn eyelet embroidery bordered by ruffles from the shoulders to the waist. The skirt has a collection of tiny pintuck gathers all the way around to the back, where it opens for fitting. Bottom hem is hand sewn open cutwork in a delicate pattern.

The fabric is lightly yellowed (tea stained) and discolored with dark spots. Has been given a gentle soak in mild soapy water, rinsed then air-dried.

The most interesting part of this listing are the two handwritten notes that accompany the dress (image 2). The dress was worn by the children of Henry S. Thacher and Elizabeth Haven Wardrobe who married in September of 1822 in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They had nine children and the dress was passed down through the generations, making its way to and estate auction in Central Ohio.
