You've no doubt been drawn to this piece by it's colours. The gorgeous shades of turquoise greens brought out to by the different layers of earthy colours featuring in the hand dyed barkcloth beads.
In Uganda's royal kingdom Buganda, barkcloth is worn for coronations and other important cultural ceremonies. Making it is an ancient craft, and one of the oldest textilles to be used by mankind.
This 2 strand necklace gives you a brilliant mix of textures. The round glossy turquoise green recycled paper beads framing a strand of funky, bold barkcloth numbers.
All the beads were handmade by the women of Mzuribeads, a cooperative of beaders based in Uganda.

Mzuribeads is one of the many inspirational community enterprises moving away from charity and onto sustainable business practice. This necklace was handmade by one of the founders, Kirstie MacLean Kalonji. Who is a Mzuribeads volunteer, based in London, and back in 2006, established Mzuribeads.com with the four initial Ugandan village producers.
