Description

Peter Markgraf (1924 - 2008) born in Munich, Germany and immigrated with his wife Trudl Markgraf in 1957. Together they created one of the most original landscape portraits of west coast mountains and scenery ever created.

"Nowhere is the delicate balance of technique and artistry more evident than in the intricate work of Peter and Traudl Markgraf. Working together in the basement of their Sunshine Coast (British Columbia) home they coaxed layers of light and shadow out of nylon screens and onto paper to get the soft, romantic effects which characterized their work.

The process they used is called screen printing. It started with an original sketch as a reference point from which they created a drawing directly on the screen. A large piece of nylon was stretched over a wooden frame and paper placed underneath. The screen was positioned on top and the image was printed by forcing paint through the nylon with a rubber squeegee. This painstaking procedure took up to 15 screens per print.

In their over 30 years of printmaking the Markgrafs not only mastered printmaking techniques, they pioneered them. Essential to their success was their commitment to working together. From beginning to end, there was no division of labor.

Their work has earned them an international reputation and an ever expanding audience who seek to share their vision."

This is how these artists are remembered today. Their legacy has left us these unforgettable serigraphs of their beloved adopted country.

They are both listed Canadian artists and are represented by:

University of Calgary Library
University of British Columbia - Fine Arts Library
Vancouver Art Gallery - Library
National Gallery of Canada - Library and Archives / Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography
Montreal Museum of Fine Arts - Library

Their prints were all made by hand in small quantities, usually around 100, in their studio on the Sunshine Coast in British Columbia, Canada and most of the editions sold out within days of being presented in Vancouver. Their work pre-dates the later mass-production of "original signed prints" when thousands of copies were mechanically produced and signed by artists who had little to do with their creation.

En Verso it reads: "Dawn to Dusk -Sunrise c. 1980. 21 x 17 inches. Signed, title and numbered 65/85 in pencil. An 8 numbered in Roman Numerals also exists. One of the seven images included in the Dawn to Dusk suite. Published by Canadian Native Prints, B.C. Printed by the artist and Traudl Markgraf.

Frame and Serigraph in good condition.
