Description

Madonna

Dimensions
With Frame: 14 1/2" H x 17 1/2" L

Vitreous glass tile mosaic on a glass base. Not grouted. Framed in a distressed metal frame. Hanging hardware installed.

This portrait of Mary is a reproduction of a mosaic which dates from 1261. It is a part of the Deësis Mosaic, which depicts the Virgin Mary and John the Baptist interceding with Christ on behalf of humanity on Judgement Day. This partially extant mosaic exists on a wall in the Hagia Sophia, a former Orthodox basilica, later a mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. The basilica was built in 360 AD. The Deësis Mosaic is often considered the beginning of the Renaissance in Byzantine art.

This mosaic is glass on glass & thus suitable to be hung in a window for the 'stained glass' effect of light shining through it. The stained glass look seems appropriate for the subject matter of the mosaic. It is ungrouted because the tilework on the face is extremely closely fitting & grout would detract from the overall effect.

All of my mosaics are handmade, one-of-a-kind, and signed/dated. Commissioned mosaics include: opaque pieces, framed or unframed, for wall hanging; translucent pieces for window or outdoor hanging; mirrors; recycled window panes with translucent mosaic; table tops; chess boards; small framed mosaics for shelf display; translucent lightbox mosaics; address plaques; indoor/outdoor installations in the Maryland/Virginia/DC area.

Prices vary depending on materials, size and complexity of the commission. Shipping costs are also an estimate.
