Description

This heavy shawl, known locally as a phulakia ludaki, is used by a bride at her wedding and in other ceremonies celebrating her move to her husband’s home. It is made up of two lengths of coarse, hand-woven jet black wool joined together, tie-dyed in gold, yellow and green and embroidered in closed square chain stitch. Embroidered medallions run down each side of the center.
These shawls are famous for their exquisite workmanship and quality. This shawl is in perfect condition. Check other prices, this is a bargain. These shawls take six months to make in all. First the wool is hand spun and woven, on a backstrap loom, in two separate halves. The pieces are then sewn together, and the shawl is dyed, with natural plant dyes including Indigo, madder and turmeric. Then the piece is embellished with the typical Rabari embroidery - bold vibrant lattice patterns with include small mirrors to deflect the evil eye from the bride, ric rac, buttons, ribbon and any other adornments the women have to hand. The Rabari word for the shawl is a 'Ludi' or 'Ludaki'. This would have been part of the brides dowry.
This is a wedding shawl, so it will only have ever been worn once, after which it will have been carefully stored.
Measurement is 128" long by 34" wide. Both ends of shawl are decorated in a similar fashion.

This is great! A friend of mine suggested a clay foot cleaner and this is the one I chose. It's easy to hold, large, and works well. Shipping was very quick too.
