Description

** See SPECIAL SHIPPING NOTE below **

Add a touch of old-fashioned charm to your bedroom or living room with this lovely pair of lamps featuring hand-painted porcelain figurines of Colonial couples marked “Made in Occupied Japan” that are affixed to decorative gold metal bases. The 12.5” tall lamps work and are in great vintage condition aesthetically.

Each lamp is 12.5” tall to the top of their sockets, one of which appears to be original, while the other is a more-modern replacement. The 1.5” high goldtone metal base on each lamp measures 5.75” wide and 4.5” deep; there are no dings, dents or rust on either base — just a couple very light scuffs typical of age and use.

The glaze remains bright and shiny on each of the 6.75” tall hand-painted porcelain figures which feature gold gilt highlights. The statues are free of chips, cracks, crazing and signs of repair. I unscrewed one of the figurines from its metal base just enough to confirm the “Hand Painted / Made in Occupied Japan” black backstamp on its underside.

The figurines are not true mirror images of each other, but close. Besides slight paint variations (for example, one couple has darker hair coloring then the other), there are also a couple slight positioning differences. One woman’s head is tilted while the other’s head is upright, and one man’s bent arm is touching his suit jacket while the other man’s arm is not.

While both of the lamps are in working condition, the mismatched cords should probably be replaced as they appear to be old, have non-polarized plugs and the brown cord is sporting a couple inches of electrical tape near its plug.

The metal rods that extend from the bases to the sockets each have a vintage patina that I believe could be polished up, if desired. The undersides of the metal bases were once covered with a thin piece of brown felt-like material, which is detached from one of the lamps and missing from the other.

These beautiful lamps — made and exported to the United States during the short time the U.S. occupied Japan after World War II (1945-1952) — will be carefully packed and shipped fully insured and with tracking.
