Description

This is a 4x4 inch square coaster featuring the design - Jazz - which is an original watercolor painting by Olga Cuttell. The coaster has a cork bottom and rounded corners. I painted the original artwork and then I apply a miniaturized print to the coaster using a process called dye sublimation. The result is a strikingly colourful and remarkably durable coaster made right in my studio in BC Canada. It is resistant to heat, cold, moister and even impact and scratching. My daughter figured out how to chip one when she used it as a Frisbee and it hit a sharp metal corner. Available with or without a Mahogany wood 4-piece coaster stand.

"Jazz" is the first of the third wave of my Feminine Spirit series, and represents a real diversion from the other feminine pieces in the collection. She was inspired by my love for Whistler, which has been forged by my near-weekly trips to Whistler village during the summer season. I participate in the Sunday farmers market there and try to get away as often as I can for the incredible biking, hiking, and swimming opportunities Whistler offers in the summer. I actually prefer it there in the summer to the winter, though the skiing is everything you've heard it is. As for "Jazz", embedded in her dress are the duel peaks of Whistler and Blackcomb. She is my lady of winter.

There are really only two pieces in the collection that are truly suited for a pairing with Jazz. The first is "Sweet Home" which has a warmer feel and the other is "Homecoming" which has more of winter's touch. Both are rich in the the same dominant blues that make Jazz so stunning.

After the "Sisters", Jazz is probably my favorite of my own work. She stands out in any room, regardless of the pallet, and has a subtle grace that carries a broad appeal. When shopping for a gift, Jazz may be as safe a bet as you can find in my whole collection.

Coasters can be bought as sets of four identical pieces or as a single; for the purpose of mixing and matching your own set. I certainly don't object to selling a single unmatched coaster, but I always think it's a shame to enjoy it alone. If you are mixing and matching, and want a stand, be sure to only order the stand once. It really does turn the coasters into a show piece.

The original piece was done using an acrylic ink on watercolor paper. The technique is very similar to watercolor but tends to keep more vibrant hews and dries permanently to the paper; enabling me to create layered pieces that would be impossible with watercolor. The original is currently available for sale; feel free to contact me for details.

Color and position may vary slightly from depicted example.
