Description

DATE CYPHER IS FOR YEAR 1875, First year made, IMPRESSED UPPERCASE MARK AND J, MODEL #1916 AND MODELED BY JOHN HENK. A MINTONS MAJOLICA 'HERON OR STORK' UMBRELLA STAND

The largest of their umbrella, stick or flower stand, measures at 41 inches high, the white stork with green eel in his mouth stands next to brown cattails and white flowers on a rocky base while stepping on a frog. It is impressed with the word MINTONS with a date cypher of January 1875 and has the model number of 1916. (not the date, but the pattern number of the stork)

It is in pristine condition and there are no chips or cracks, repairs or breaks.

Naturalistic in model, standing on one leg atop a rocky mound, an eel clasped in his beak, a frog beneath his foot, the stand is formed by tall bulrushes and water-lily pads
41in. (104.1cm.) high

As seen in Cf. Victoria Bergesen, Majolica, British, Continental and American wares, 1851-1915, London, 1989, colour plate VII; Nicholas Dawes, Majolica, New York, 1990, p. 79, fig. 134; Marilyn G. Karmason and Joan Stacke, Majolica A Complete History and Illustrated Survey, New York, 1989, p. 55.

John Henk, son of Christian Henk, apprenticed at the firm in 1859 and rose to Chief Staff Modeler specializing in majolica animals.

This exact item sold not too long ago at a famous auction house, name begins with a "C", and sold for $23,235.00 plus buyers fees and shipping, probably placing the total cost near $29,0000.00. Theirs was imperfect with cracks and chips and crazing. Ours is perfect!

IMPORTANT: I was forced to put a price on to ship but it will be actual charges, which I simply cannot tell you what it will be. Shipping is additional and it will be billed to you at exact cost. I am elderly and I cannot even lift it. I can arrange for it to be shipped but the crate alone to ship it will be about $450.00 to $600.00, plus the shipping. Please don't ask what the shipping will cost because I have no way of knowing. Buyer would pay exact shipping and crate building costs. Or you can pick it up.
