Description

The beads on the necklace were purchased in Indonesia between 1992 - 1996. They are terra cotta and orange drawn glass beads called Indo-Pacific, or trade wind beads. This type of bead was made abundantly and traded widely during a long period estimated to have occurred between the 1st century BC and the 12th century AD. Beads of these colors are of a type that are sometimes referred to a Mutisalah or 'false pearls'.

There were many centers of production and the beads were traded from India to the Philippines, from Africa to China and beyond. There is evidence of nomadic production as well.

There are many strands of carefully matched beads on this necklace. The ancient beads are interspersed with handmade granulated silver beads from Bali (made in the 90's) and two antique silver beads from India.

These beads need to be treated with respect, but I have worn mine for more than 20 years with no breakage.

The last picture in this group shows the necklace with an extending piece which can also be purchased ($32), it is 12" long and makes the necklace more versatile to wear. The extension is comprised of the same beads - but with more silver to make it more durable at the neck.
