Description

Wallace Nutting (1861-1941) an American entrepreneur; by applying the Henry Ford production method, huge numbers of photographs were printed and provided to an assembly line of colorists (mostly women). Each colorist would have a specific color and would apply this color to one portion of the photograph before passing it along to the next in line until at the end of the line the print was completely finished and sent to be signed, titled and framed.

All of them were signed Wallace Nutting, although it was unlikely that he signed many (if indeed any) of the photos. He ultimately employed other photographers and over 200 colorists.

This lovely scene is a hand colored photo that covers the same territory, at the same time Wallace Nutting was offering his work to the public. His original works are still very popular almost a hundred years after he began and the entrepreneurs who noticed his remarkable success were soon giving him a run for his money.

Many times it was the very people working with Nutting that were shooting these photographs and after a century as well, even these photographs are still popular.

The photo's are romantic with a definite dream factor at play. As an art form they're compelling, they take the hard edge away from a black and white landscape, bridging the differences between a painting and a photograph.

The idea of hand coloring a photograph and making prints was quite an original idea. These prints are perhaps some of the first examples of a mechanical multi-media art form in the 20th Century.

Frame and photo in good condition.
