This is a beautiful burgundy leather NYC Coach Diplomat Style Briefcase. I originally thought this was a Coach Brief Bag Style, but I have changed my mind and now firmly believe this is a New York City Coach Diplomat Briefcase Style briefcase made sometime in the 1970's or 1980's. My belief is based on the fact that the Creed states it was made in New York City with registration No 080-6816 and the size and design is consistent with the Diplomat style No 5170 which, unlike the similarly styled 'Brief Bag', has a second compartment inside of the bag. The Diplomat Style is described in the 1987 Coach Catalog listing (See photo in Collage) as follows: Briefcase when it was first listed:

No 5170 Diplomat Briefcase $214 ($454 in 2015 dollars)

This legal-size briefcase is gusseted for extra large carrying capacity and is divided into two interior sections to keep things organized. Leather lined flap with two flat pockets underneath to hold cards, airline tickets, travel documents, calculators and pens. Additional pocket inside. Double turn clocks are solid brass. Dimensions 16 1/2" x 11" x 2/34".

Black, British tan, burgundy, mocha, tabac.

Please note that this bag was not manufactured for use with a carrying strap, and, therefore, there is no strap available for this style.

This case is in very good condition. It is structurally sound without any holes, tears or rips in the leather. There are some scuffs and scratches and there is a 'tan line' where the flap ends when closed that shows there has been some fading below the flap. It is my opinion the color of this bag is Burgundy but you may disagree and say it's mocha.

We have listed a similar bags in Mahogany and Tabac leather.

Significance of NYC Coach Creed

NYC Coach bags are beginning to disappear at an alarming rate. This Coach leather bag is one of the most sought after Coach products by collectors because it is a "New York City Bag". These are some of the highest quality Coach products. "New York City" bags were made in the original Coach factory in New York City that operated from the late 1960's through the mid 1980's. Some, but not all, of the Coach bags produced during this era were designed by the well known American designer Bonnie Cashin. Consequently, when you buy a New York City Coach bag you are buying more than an accessory, you are making a potential investment.

The statement on the creed: "Made in New York City, U.S.A." verifies this bag's origin. It is authenticated by Coach Bag registration number: 080-6816 .

Please review the photos carefully because they are part of this piece’s description and condition. Please feel free to ask questions or ask for more photos. Etsy limits the number of photos we can post with listing so we have more available.
