Item details

Saint Francis of Assisi medal with "Patron of Sick Animals" on the back. Measures 3/4" high. Silver-oxidized metal. Made in Italy.

St Francis (circa 1181 - 3 October 1226) was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher. Spoiled and rebellious as a youth, he abandoned a life of luxury for a life devoted to Christianity after reportedly hearing the voice of God, who commanded him to rebuild the Christian church and live in poverty. He founded the men's Order of Friars Minor, the women's Order of St Clare, and the Third Order of St Francis.

St Francis had a special love for nature and animals and is often depicted preaching to the birds, as he is in this medal.

Patronage: Animals, merchants, the ecology
