In ancient Greece, hemlock was used to poison condemned prisoners. The most famous victim of hemlock poisoning is the philosopher Socrates. After being condemned to death for impiety in 399 BC, Socrates was given a potent infusion of the hemlock plant.

This print is adapted from a vintage illustration of the hemlock plant published in Köhler's Medizinal-Pflanze. Kohler's Medicinal Plants is a German rare medicinal guide published by Franz Eugen Köhler in 1887 in three volumes. It was written by Hermann Köhler, edited by Gustav Pabst, and contains some 300 full page chromolithography plates by the illustrators Walther Müller, C.F. Schmidt, and K. Gunther.

Conium maculatum is known by several common names. In addition to the English poison hemlock, the Australian Carrot Fern, and the Irish devil's bread or devil's porridge, poison parsley, spotted corobane, and spotted hemlock are used.

The image has been digitally enhanced and put onto a tea-stained paper background to enhance the antique tone.

All prints are on professional, 100% cotton, 240gsm textured watercolor paper that is made specifically for digital prints. 5x7, 8x10 and 11x14 Prints will be shipped with a clear protective sleeve and sturdy backing. 13x19 Prints will be shipped in a clear sleeve and rolled in a tube.

13x19 prints can be framed as-is but will also fit into a 3" mat for a 12x18 print, which can be used with a standard 18x24 frame.
